“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear…”
(Psalm 46:1-2a, ESV)

God is our refuge and strength!  Doesn’t that sound comforting? ‘Refuge and strength’ signify a shelter from danger, a place of hope and trust, might, and power!  ‘A very present help in trouble’ tells us God is always with us and will help when we are in any trouble. Because of this, we do not need to be frightened, terrified, or fearful of what life may bring our way.

What causes fear in your heart?  Are you terrified as you think of your children growing up in this sinful world?  Do you often worry about what would happen to you and your family if there were a big earthquake or other natural disasters?  Does panic grab you when you think about getting on an airplane?

This verse and others tell us clearly we do not need to live in fear! 2 Timothy 1:7 encourages us with these words:

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control”.

God doesn’t want us to be paralyzed by any kind of fear!  He is waiting to be that place of hope and trust for us! He is mighty and powerful!

Friend, may this be our prayer today as we seek to live in obedience to God:

Oh, Father, please help me turn my fears over to You.  Help me remember that You are MY refuge and MY strength, always walking with me through any kind of trouble, giving me Your power because mine alone is not enough.  Therefore, I will not fear! In the powerful name of Jesus, amen.
